Principal Investigator: Prof. Georg Schett, M.D.
Department of Internal Medicine 3 – Rheumatology and Immunology
Main tasks in the project and previous experience relevant to those tasks:
The main tasks of our centre will be (i) to characterize the effects of current therapies on animal models with regards to local and systemic bone loss, (ii) to investigate the potential of endogenous modulators of Wnt signaling, (iii) to characterize tissue remodeling by stromal cells in RA and related diseases and (iv) to coordinate existing biobanks in RA-like diseases. The members of the Department of Internal Medicine 3 of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg have longstanding evidence in these tasks with primary focuses on animal models of RA, osteoimmunology and fibroblast biology in RA and related diseases. The Department of Internal Medicine 3 was awarded by the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) for its publications in these fields as a „EULAR Center of Excellence“. We are although participating in other national and Pan-European programs such as ANCYLOSS, IMMUNOBONE and MASTERSWITCH. Within the FP7 integrated project Masterswitch close collaborations exist with Athens (Kollias), London (Cope), Leiden (Huinzinga), Glasgow (McInnes), Zurich (Gay) and Vienna (Smolen/Steiner), Cologne (Manolis Pasparakis). It also closely cooperates with other centers involved in IMI5 such as Amsterdam (Tak).
