The main objective of ‘WP 7 – Common denominators’ is to evaluate the impact of environmental influences on disease development and to further identify co-stimulatory factors leading to the final break of self tolerance. The important environmental factor of smoking will be addressed in this context and factors that emerge from the lungs. Thus, the interaction and stimulation of different immune cells (e.g. of Mast cells, Basophils, Antigen presenting cells, T-cells and B cells, and cofactors necessary for their activation) will be further investigated, as well as the role of so called alarmins or the citrullination of proteins, a disease causing modifications of proteins and an important first step of disease development in one group of RA patients (ACPA positive patients).
